Christmas Wall Art

Let me start by saying how much I envy those folks who were born with the crafty gene!  How wonderful it must be-to pick up a pair of scissors, a sheet of a construction paper, and glue stick, and within minutes, create a masterpiece!!!

Take my daughter in law, for example....

When the Good Lord was handing out crafty skills-I think Katt received a triple dose, as the Christmas card she sent us last year, definitely shows.  No crooked lines, or glue bubbles here, folks!  Just pure talent.

I've saved every birthday, anniversary and Christmas card Katt ever made for us, along with the graduation board she made for my son in law, Shane, that turned out amazing, even though she only had a couple of hours to make it.

Yes indeed-I envy talent like that-I really do.

Obviously,  I was at the end of the crafty line-and when the Good Lord finally got to me, it was Sunday, and time to rest!

But that's okay.  Over the years, I've learned to accept that I couldn't cut a straight line to save my soul-and that glue(when in my hands), can become a deadly weapon!!

Which is why I'm a bit embarrassed to show you my latest project.  But I will-because this blog of mine is all about the journey.  Sometimes great things happen-and sometimes-not so much.

So let's begin THIS journey....

I found this chippy window out at the farm a couple of weeks ago.  I didn't have a clue what I was going to with it at the time, but it didn't matter.  Everything I find on the farm was a part of my dad-and finding a way to re-purpose it, brings me that much closer to him.

After a bit of thought-I decided to turn the old window into a picture frame.  I envisioned putting a back on the window-painting it with chalkboard paint-and adding lovely picture frames into each pane, with a photo of our kids.  Then I would write a little quote.  Something cute and sweet-and just sappy enough for them all to say, "Oh MOM!".

It would be perfect for Christmas!

Yes, I had it all figured out-and was so excited, until I shared my plan with hubby!!!!

"It won't work," he said, after inspecting the window.  "The wood is too brittle, and it will shatter if you try and put nails into it."

I could see that look of dismissal already forming in his eye, and something else....RELIEF!!

Well, he wasn't getting off that easy!  I was determined to do this project-and I desperately needed his help, because I also don't have mechanical skills.  (When the Good Lord was handing them out, I was still in line for my crafty skills!)

"What about glue?" I asked, feeling a bit smug that I'd even thought of it.

This time I got the old 'eye' roll.  "First of all, we don't have any wood thin enough to put on it-secondly, you'd have to scrape off all the chipped paint, or the glue won't stick!  And thirdly, you have Christmas stuff scattered all of the house-and I really don't think you need to start ANOTHER project!"

Oh ya, did I forget to mention I started a new plan for decorating for Christmas?  If you missed it, you might want to check it out here.

Okay, so he got points on all three counts-so what!  That still didn't solve the problem.

So I came up with one on my own.  Foam board and duct tape!

Sadly, the foam board buckled after two coats of chalk paint-but I bet that duct tape would have worked!!

So there I sat on Wednesday night-dinner was late-hubby was on his second Tom and Jerry-and I still hadn't found away to turn that window into a masterpiece.

This called for drastic action.

I needed to summon the heaven's and ask them for as much crafty skills, as they could spare!

No, my wall art isn't perfect-and isn't even close to what I had envisioned-but I'm okay with that.  It's all about  making an attempt-even if it's destined to be a failure, that truly counts.  In this case, it took two attempts (FYI-don't ever use wood glue when crafting)-but I finally completed the project.

And hubby didn't go hungry.....

And last night-I finished the foyer, and started tackling the decorations in the dining room.

I'll be sharing at these amazing parties-filled with all the folks who definitely have the 'crafty' gene-so stop on over and be inspired!!!

***Update- unfortunately this project ended up being a complete failure, when the ends of the photo's began turning up at the ends, due to being hung above a heating vent. So, I am back to square one-wish me luck!!!!
Blessings,

Christine

  1. You're too cute! It certainly was not Sunday when you got to the head of the talent line. I've seen plenty from you my dear. You did great to figure out something when the original plan didn't work. Good for you! Thanks for sharing with SYC.
